A new, different kind of search engine hoping to take on Google is out. It's name is YaCy. It is pronounced as "Ya see". It has been designed to bring internet searching back to users, and provide a free, distributed web search which is powered by the world’s users. Anyone can download the YaCy software and help the search system improve and spread the load of queries. This search page was opened on November 28th and now has 600 participants that share the load of queries.
"Most of what we do on the internet involves search," said Michael Christen, YaCy's project leader in a statement. "It's the vital link between us and the information we're looking for."
"For such an essential function, we cannot rely on a few large companies, and compromise our privacy in the process," he said.
"We are moving away from the idea that services need to be centrally controlled," said Karsten Gerloff, president of the FSFE. "Instead, we are realising how important it is to be independent, and to create infrastructure that doesn't have a single point of failure."
Anyhow, the chances of YaCy becoming a hit are mixed. Sometime back, a search engine named Cuil had emerged which was developed by two former Google employees and was shut down in late September, 2010. YaCy must do something different from what Google does, in order to sustain in the race.
