Windows Experience Index

Windows System Assessment Tool is a module of Windows Vista / 7. It actually measures the capability of a system i.e; the hardware component and expresses them or reports them in numbers called Windows Experience Index (WEI). The rating ranges are 1.0 to 5.9 for Vista and 1.0 to 7.9 for Win 7. The rating is calculated by assessment and is to be changed with any hardware updates to the computer.
The ratings will be given for processor, memory, 2D graphics, 3D graphics, and HDD. And so, five sub-scores are obtained. The least of the five will be the base score of the system.
These ratings clearly give an idea of where an extra update has to be made to the system in order to give better performance. For example, if the calculations per second are low, then it indicates that the change in processor would make the system a better one. The current version of Windows 7
performs the  following tests

  1. Aero Assessment
  2. Direct3D Alpha Blending Assessment
  3. Direct3D Texture Load Assessment
  4. Direct3D ALU Assessment
  5. Windows Media Playback
  6. CPU Performance
  7. Memory Performance
  8. Disk Performance

It also warns the user to not to panic if the screen flashes during assessment.
